This large range of calls is highlighted through cadencing, intonation, and frequency modulations that allow more detailed information to be conveyed. Acoustic communication between laughing kookaburras increases 2–3 months before the breeding season, September to January, because male aggression also increases. The adult male will sing a short portion of the call while the offspring mimics this call — usually unsuccessfully. The laughing kookaburras call is made through a complex sound production system — by forcing air from the lungs into the bronchial tubes. The tail is rusty reddish-orange with dark brown bars and white tips on the feathers. They have a white or cream-coloured body and head with a dark brown stripe across each eye and more faintly over the top of the head.
Their powerful beaks are used to stun or kill prey by repeatedly striking it against a branch or the ground, a behavior particularly famous when dealing with snakes. Kookaburras are formidable predators, known for their opportunistic and varied diet. Their closest relatives are other tree kingfishers — suggesting an ancient adaptation to forest environments.
Behavior and Habitat
The kookaburras are declining in population because of predators (lack of prey), and the environment. They live in sclerophyll woodland and open forests — in almost any area with trees large enough to hold the nests and open patches with hunting areas. Although most birds will accept handouts and take meat from barbecues (feeding kookaburras ground beef or pet food is not advised), because they do not include enough calcium and roughage. Unlike many other kingfishers (they rarely eat fish), although they have been known to take goldfish from garden ponds. They are territorial (except for the rufous-bellied), which often live with their young from the previous season.
Relationship with humans
Kookaburras hunt much as other kingfishers (or indeed Australasian robins) do, by perching on a convenient branch or wire and waiting patiently for prey to pass by. This is noticeable in the blue-winged and the rufous-bellied, where males have blue tails and females have reddish hockey betting tips -brown tails. The Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay and Wiradjuri people named this bird “guuguubarra”. The laughing and blue-winged species are direct competitors in the area where their ranges now overlap. Most species of kookaburras tend to live in family units, with offspring helping the parents hunt and care for the next generation of offspring. Kookaburras occupy woodland territories , including forests, in loose family groups, and their laughter serves the same purpose as a great many other bird calls—to mark territorial borders. The range of the laughing kookaburra overlaps with that of the blue-winged kookaburra in an area of eastern Queensland that extends from the Cape York Peninsula south to near Brisbane. It is more common where the understory is open and sparse or where the ground is covered with grass. In the 1860s, during his second term as governor of New Zealand, George Grey arranged for the release of laughing kookaburras on Kawau Island.
Family groups utilize their loud territorial calls to defend feeding and nesting territories from rival kookaburras. When food and habitat are adequate — laughing kookaburras can survive for many years in their natural environment. Offspring from previous breeding seasons stay with their parents and help raise younger siblings. It hunts prey most kingfishers would never attempt (raises young with extended family groups), and thrives in environments from deep woodland to suburban backyard. It has been introduced to Western Australia (Tasmania), Kangaroo Island and New Zealand, where it is now established but not native. The laughing kookaburra is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable overall population. The classification is taxonomic; the hunting strategy is functionally raptor-like.
